My
name is Miranda Vassh and I am an 18-year-old freshman at the University of
Arkansas. My major is kinesiology with a concentration in exercise science and
I plan on going Pre-Physical Therapy (PT). I am from Dallas, Texas and this is
my first time being away from home, so obviously, I’m still trying to figure my
life out. I love to run, watch Netflix, and eat. I have a 11-year-old Shih-Tzu
and home and I miss her the most out of everyone. I am writing this blog for a
Composition 1 class, where I have been observing a community of people over
time and writing about my findings.
The community I chose to observe for
the semester is Physical Therapists. The reason I chose to observe Physical
Therapy is because I am studying to be a Physical Therapist and want to learn
more about the career and values of the community before I dedicate tons of
hard work and lots and lots of education to becoming a Physical Therapist! I
have grown up watching my mom, aunt, and grandma who are all Physical
Therapists, along with my cousin who is a first year in PT school, and my other
cousin who was just accepted into PT school. Because the love my mom, aunt, and
grandma have for the career they have inspired my cousins and I to also pursue
it. Throughout the semester, the patient/therapist connection has stood out to
me during my observations. This relationship goes beyond an ordinary patient
relationship, and shows me that the therapists value their patients and
frequently go above their job description to help them.
To complete observations and research
on Physical Therapists, I have observed an outpatient clinic, a nursing home,
interviewed a PT student, completed online research, and surveyed a group of
college students. In order to observe at Flower Mound Assisted Living (nursing
home), I got in contact with a Physical Therapist that works there over the
phone, and they set a date for me to come and observe with the permission of
their manager, and patients. I met the Therapist in the lobby at the nursing
home and observed them treat two patients. To observe at the UAMS Outpatient
Clinic, I emailed the man in charge and scheduled a date and time to come
observe. I showed up at our scheduled time and observed a Physical Therapist
treat a patient. Additionally, I surveyed a group of college students about
their opinions and perceptions on Physical Therapy, and researched academic and
popular sources on google scholar and on the UARK library catalog.
